US Trump Imposes 25% Tariff on Iran Trade, India Faces 75% Duty Risk

15 January 2026

US President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on any country trading with Iran, effective immediately, applying to all business with the United States.

The move could sharply impact India, potentially pushing US tariffs on Indian imports to 75% (existing 50% + new 25%).

India–Iran trade in FY 2024–25 stood at $1.68 billion, with $1.24 billion exports and $440 million imports.

India maintains strategic and trade ties with Iran, including energy imports and development of the Chabahar Port.

China criticised the move, warning that tariff and trade wars have no winners, while Iran faces its largest protests in years.
