India–US Trade Talks Advance as Tariffs Cut to 18%

04 February 2026

USISPF and the US Chamber of Commerce welcomed progress toward an India–US trade deal following talks between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

India’s reciprocal tariff cut from 25% to 18% was termed a positive first step toward a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).

The proposed BTA is expected to cover tariffs, market access, non-tariff barriers and sector-wide trade issues, with further negotiations in the coming months.

USISPF reiterated support for expanding bilateral trade to $500 billion and strengthening resilient supply chains across the Indo-Pacific.

US Chamber president Suzanne P Clark and US Senator Jim Risch praised the move, saying reduced trade barriers will boost private-sector collaboration and strategic economic ties.
