Brazil Targets India to Expand Cotton Exports Under Mercosur Pact
A Brazilian delegation joined President Lula in Asia to boost cotton exports to India and expand the Mercosur–India pact active since 2009.
Brazil is seeking to expand the preferential list from 450 products to 4,000 products, while targeting a reduction in India’s 11% import tariff and securing zero-duty quotas.
Abrapa estimates exports to India could reach 300,000 tonnes annually, generating around US$ 500 million, compared to 160,000 tonnes exported in 2024–25.
Since 2024, Brazilian cotton exports to India surged from 8,000 tonnes to 160,000 tonnes, raising Brazil’s market share from 4% to 24%.
The delegation will visit New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Coimbatore and conclude in Mumbai on the 28th, engaging India’s textile ministry and industry leaders.
